The war of gods and giants, from the Gigantomachia Frieze at the Berlin Pergamon Museum. See also: the Telephos Frieze (both via youngrobv) and a recent Roger Sandall rant on how the anti-Hellenist cultural relativists suck and how Greece was so much more awesome than the Persians, for Reasons. I don’t have a horse in the race either way, but Sandall just reminds me of how Frank Miller ruined Leonidas for me, and how much I loved that old William Golding essay (The Hot Gates) before I read (and saw) 300. I don’t mean that in a “Michael Bay raped my childhood" way. I think it’s a good thing that 300 exists, because Golding is just too good, too persuasive, and Thermopylae is something that needs complicating. Who better than Frank Miller to thoroughly ruin the romance, and show you the ugly, chauvinistic, braggadocio underside of it all?
